Plus the box with Bellward on his settee made me actually feel fluttery.The whole flow is just so much better in the graphic novels than the books.This goes right through the Cullen house into Edward’s room, where Edward says he’s happy to tell her his secrets and it makes much more sense for Bella to then say she doesn’t find him frightening, and for Edward to be so cheery and light from secret-telling that he becomes playful, tackling her onto the settee–where Bella, finding herself in his arms in his bedless bedroom, asks about the two of them and ‘marital activities’. Edward talks Bella through Carlisle’s history, which leads naturally to all the Cullens joining the clan, and details of their backstory and vampiric gifts.I’m just gonna say it: I reread this bit–where Edward brings Bella home for the first time–in the graphic novels afterwards, and the way Young Kim adapted it makes SO MUCH MORE SENSE.I can’t think of a single other book that does that, and this result is probably why.

Though of course the intensity comes back with another Deep and Meaningful Conversation about their love for each other and how Edward’s been feeling.

It seems so natural and teenage-fun instead of intense. Though I do still love this whole scene of Edward hiding when Charlie comes back, so he doesn’t find Edward in Bella’s room.Make them worth their space on the page, so you can blame the characters, not the off writing. Once more for the people at the back: if you’re gonna drop details like that in there, lean into them. I wish there had been more about her being flattered by the sleep-watching.Bella is FAR too chill about Edward breaking into her house to watch her sleep, but what’s new?.
